Property tycoon Wang Jianlin, who is worth more than 20billion pounds, has bought a ten-bedroom home on Kensington Palace Gardens, which is on the same super-secure street as Roman Abramovich and Tamara Ecclestone. Wang, who owns Dorset-based Sunseeker Yachts, is now expected to spend tens of millions giving the mansion a makeover. The property, which was previously the home of the Nigerian High Commissioner, boasts nine bathrooms, grand entertaining rooms and an indoor swimming pool. When the mansion was originally sold in 1856, it cost Kensington gentleman Peter Carthew around 7,000 pounds. Fully refurbished, the mansion is likely to be worth up to 140m pounds, or 7,000 pounds per square foot. The staggering deal was revealed by the London Evening Standard. Guiliana La Pera, the buying agency reported to have worked on the deal, declined to comment. But documents from the Land Registry show a lease has been agreed between The Crown Estate, The Queen and Lin Ning, who is Mr Wang#39;s wife. Property consultant Charles McDowell said the mansion was a unique buy. He said: #39;It is not very often a house comes onto the market on Kensington Palace Gardens. This home has palatial dimensions, is very large and has a nice indoor swimming pool. It is a very good home which in a good position on Kensington Palace Gardens but it does need to be modernised. The road is a desirable place to live because it is secure, which is very important, is in a good location and is also a very attractive road. Finding houses like this in London is difficult which makes Kensington Palace Gardens unique.#39;他表示:“肯辛顿宫花园的房子不常出售,这栋豪宅面积很大,拥有一个非常好的室内游泳池。 The deal will see Wang, who is ranked by Forbes as one of the world#39;s wealthiest and most powerful men, pay a stamp duty bill of 9,513,750 pounds. /201512/417735The balance in the art world is shifting. As the world’s richest private collectors get richer, publicly financed museums are, by and large, getting poorer. Last week, critics made their first assessments of The Broad, the 120,000-square-foot private museum in downtown Los Angeles to showcase the contemporary art collection of the billionaire philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad. The museum has an endowment of more than 0 million, and additional funds for acquisitions. Also last week, four other collectors were displaying their art in a very different showcase that could be seen as an alternative model for private collectors. Four museums and a church in Sheffield, a town in Yorkshire in northern England, famed in Victorian times for its steel-making, opened their own exhibition of contemporary art, running through Dec. 12. Squeezed by the British government’s austerity program, Sheffield City Council now finances its local museums to the tune of 1.5 million pounds a year, about .3 million, a reduction of more than 30 percent since 2009. The acquisition fund stands at just 70,000. That doesn’t go very far in today’s art market, and any purchases by British regional museums have to be supported by financing from public bodies like Arts Council England and private donations. A show supported by private collectors, therefore, can be a boon to the museums, and to the collectors themselves. “Private collectors have a lot of money and buying power that has driven growth in the art market,” the Berlin art adviser and writer Marta Gnyp said in a phone interview. Her book on the subject, “The Shift: Art and the Rise to Power of Contemporary Collectors,” was published on Aug. 4.“私人藏家财力雄厚,购买力强,拉动了艺术市场的增长,”柏林艺术顾问兼作家玛尔塔·吉尼普(Marta Gnyp)在电话采访中说。她写了一本关于这一主题的书,名叫《变化:艺术与当代藏家权力的上升》(The Shift: Art and the Rise to Power of Contemporary Collectors),今年8月4日出版。“Public museums have financial restraints,” she added. “But they are still attractive to private collectors. Public institutions give a quality stamp and visibility to collections.”“公共物馆财力不足,”她补充说,“但它们对私人藏家依然具有吸引力。 Museums Sheffield is using the exhibition project, called “Going Public,” and a conference at Sheffield Hallam University on Oct. 12 to examine how cash-strapped public galleries and wealthy private collectors can cooperate more effectively. “Going Public” is the first time that four major international collectors of contemporary art have collaborated on a regional museum show in Britain. As part of the joint show, recent Chinese and digital art from Dominique and Sylvain Levy’s DSL collection in Paris are on display at Sheffield’s SIA and Site galleries. At the Millennium Gallery, eight works of Minimalism — including the classic 1967 Sol LeWitt white-painted aluminum sculpture “Serial Project #1, A6” — have been lent by the French collector Nicolas Cattelain in London. Marcel Duchamp’s 1952 “La Boite-en-valise” (Box in a Suitcase) is among 35 Surrealist works being shown by the Berlin collector Egidio Marzona in the Art Deco Graves Gallery museum. And unsettling installations — like a 1996 Chapman Brothers corpse hanging upside down over a vat of blood and a 2009 tapestry by the Polish artist Goshka Macuga of London foretelling today’s migrant crisis — are transforming the medieval interior of Sheffield Cathedral, courtesy of Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, who has a private museum in Turin. “They’re all true believers,” Sebastien Montabonel, an art consultant in London, said of the collectors who contributed work to the shows. He originated the project four years ago with Mark Doyle of the Contemporary Art Society in London. “They understand art is getting expensive and that their role is important.” He added: “Two or three collectors can make a huge impact, and being a big fish in a small pond is a good selling point.”“他们都是真正的信徒,”伦敦艺术顾问塞巴斯蒂安·蒙塔波奈(Sebastien Montabonel)提到那些给展览提供作品的收藏家时说。 These selections from four serious collectors will give residents of and visitors to Sheffield a distinctive overview of some of the more interesting things international artists have been doing over the past 100 years. But can this model be repeated at other regional museums? In February 2014, Mr. Marzona, one of the participating collectors in “Going Public,” transferred ownership of 372 pieces of 20th-century avant-garde art to the city of Berlin, having aly given a substantial proportion of his collection to the city’s museums in 2002.2014年2月,藏家马尔佐纳(他是Going Public项目的参与者之一)把自己收藏的372件20世纪先锋艺术品转让给了柏林市政府。 But nowadays, as Ms. Gnyp notes in “The Shift,” the private museum owned by a collector or an associated foundation has become the model, rather than donations to public institutions, despite the tax advantages that can accrue from such gifts. Ms. Gnyp writes that no fewer than 125 museums were created worldwide from 2006 to 2013, as opposed to just 25 in the 1990s. Wealthy individuals like Mr. Broad and Ms. Sandretto Re Rebaudengo want to keep control of their collections and play a more proactive role in the art world. “I want to show my collection and share it with other people,” said Ms. Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, who began buying art in 1992 and now has more than 1,000 works. “But private collectors can do so much more. They can be involved in the production of art and in education.” For example, for the 2009 Venice Biennale she commissioned the Macuga tapestry hanging in Sheffield Cathedral. She said that “Going Public,” with its expansive use of loans, could prove a model for future collaborations between art’s public and private sectors.“我想展示我的收藏品,和其他人分享,”桑德里托·雷·里保丹戈说。 But as private museums have grown in power and influence, so too has the fixation on contemporary art as an investment. Media reports of spectacular price rises for fashionable artists have attracted droves of newcomers to the market. “There are probably no more than 200 or 300 real collectors who have a vision and have proper curation,” Mr. Montabonel said. “The others are just buyers. Their ‘collections’ will be forgotten in 10 years’ time.”“很可能只有两三百位真正的藏家,他们有远见,也有合适的管理方法,”蒙塔波奈说,“其他人只是买家。 Is it that simple, though? Are there such clear distinctions between “real” collectors and mere “buyers”? The Broads were collecting contemporary art long before it was being promoted in power point presentations as an “alternative asset class.” Yet a number of visitors to their gleaming new museum have noted how the procession of works by blue-chip names like Jeff Koons, Ed Ruscha, Mark Bradford and Mark Grotjahn hung on temporary white partition walls can make the display, at times, resemble the world’s most expensive art fair. “The lack of independent taste among high-powered collectors is most depressing,” Kenneth Baker, the former art critic at The San Francisco Chronicle, said in an email. He has viewed the Broad collection twice but has yet to visit the new museum. “Broad and his ilk certainly don’t have to think like speculators when they shop for art, unless they can’t help themselves.”“财力雄厚的藏家们缺乏独立的品味是最令人沮丧的,”《旧金山纪事报》(The San Francisco Chronicle)的前艺术家肯尼思·贝克(Kenneth Baker)在邮件采访中说。 The difference could not be greater when contrasted with the subject of the first exhibition at Damien Hirst’s private museum, which will open in a 37,000 square-foot converted factory in Lambeth in South London on Oct. 8. The inaugural show will focus on the Sheffield-born abstract painter John Hoyland (1934-2011), a surprising choice for the former superstar of Young British Art. Now 50, Mr. Hirst is ranked as the 450th wealthiest person in Britain, worth 215 million, according to The Sunday Times’s “Rich List” for 2015. The artist has been a compulsive buyer since the 1980s, and his Murderme Collection now contains more than 3,000 works by Picasso, Warhol, Banksy, Bacon and a host of others. As it turns out, he is also an admirer of Hoyland, who was influenced by the Abstract Expressionists, and whom he discovered when visiting Leeds Art Gallery as a schoolboy. “In my eyes, John Hoyland was an artist who was never afraid to push the boundaries,” Mr. Hirst says on his website.“在我看来,约翰·霍伊兰是一位从不畏惧打破界线的艺术家,”赫斯特在自己的网站上说。Unlike the opening of The Broad, the first Hirst Museum show might be closer to Mr. Montabonel’s notions of “true” collecting. As yet, Hoyland doesn’t command much of an international market. The highest auction price for one of his works is “just” 185,000, paid back in 2008. By and large, people looking at these paintings won’t be distracted by their monetary worth, and the experience will be closer to that of visiting a public museum. The “financialization” of contemporary art, and the ways this has, or has not, influenced collectors, might be an interesting break-out topic for that Sheffield conference in October. In the meantime, what do Yorkshire’s down-to-earth locals think of this fancy international art dropping into their city?与此同时,约克郡的普通百姓又是如何看待这场空降到这座城市的高级国际艺术展的呢?“I like it,” Ronald Fletcher, 87, said outside Sheffield Cathedral. “I’m not overly religious. I don’t really believe in God, but I’ve been looking for something since I lost my wife. At least someone knows the true value of art. /201509/401146Chinese courts are to step up efforts to protect judicial officers after a Beijing judge was shot dead near her home last week. Ma Caiyun, 38, a judge at Changping District People#39;s Court, was shot in the face and stomach at about 9:30 pm on Friday in the capital#39;s Huilongguan community. People living with heart disease, high blood pressure or stroke may benefit from practicing traditional Chinese exercises such as Tai Chi, showed a study published last Wednesday in the Journal of the American Heart Association. ;Traditional Chinese exercises are a low-risk, promising intervention that could be helpful in improving quality of life in patients with cardiovascular diseases -- the leading cause of disability and death in the world,; study author Yu Liu, dean of the School of Kinesiology at Shanghai University of Sport in China, said in a statement. ;But the physical and psychological benefits to these patients of this increasingly popular form of exercise must be determined based on scientific evidence.;“但是,这种越来越流行的锻炼方式对于病人身心的益处还需要通过科学研究的明。”In the new study, the researchers reviewed 35 research articles, which included 2,249 cardiovascular disease patients from 10 countries. They found Chinese exercises helped reduce the participants#39; systolic blood pressure, the top number, by more than 9.12 mmHg, and diastolic blood pressure, the bottom number, by more than 5 mmHg on average. The study also revealed small, but statistically significant drops in the levels of bad cholesterol, or low-density lipoprotein, and triglycerides. Chinese exercises also seemed to improve quality of life and reduce depression in patients with cardiovascular disease, they said. However, traditional Chinese exercises did not significantly improve participant#39;s heart rate, aerobic fitness level or scores on a general health questionnaire. Next, Liu and his team planned to conduct new randomized controlled trials to confirm the effect of different types of traditional Chinese exercises on chronic diseases. /201603/432250

Harper Lee, whose first novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” about racial injustice in a small Alabama town, sold more than 10 million copies and became one of the most beloved and most taught works of fiction ever written by an American, has died. She was 89. Her death was confirmed by HarperCollins, her publisher. The instant success of “To Kill a Mockingbird,” which was published in 1960 and won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction the next year, turned Lee into a literary celebrity, a role she found oppressive and never learned to accept. The enormous success of the film version of the novel, released in 1962 with Gregory Peck in the starring role of Atticus Finch, a small-town Southern lawyer who defends a black man falsely accused of raping a white woman, only added to Lee#39;s fame and fanned expectations for her next novel.《杀死一只知更鸟》1960年出版,很快获得成功,第二年获得普利策奖(Pulitzer Prize),哈珀·李因此成为文学名人,这个角色让她觉得很沉重,从未学会接受。 For more than half a century, it failed to appear. Then, in 2015, long after the ing public had given up on seeing anything more from Lee, a sequel appeared under mysterious circumstances. “I never expected any sort of success with `Mockingbird,”#39; Lee told a radio interviewer in 1964. “I was hoping for a quick and merciful death at the hands of the reviewers, but, at the same time I sort of hoped someone would like it well enough to give me encouragement.” Instead, she said, “I got rather a whole lot, and in some ways this was just about as frightening as the quick, merciful death I#39;d expected.”1964年,李在接受电台采访时说:“我从没想过《知更鸟》能取得任何成功。 Lee gained a reputation as a literary Garbo, a recluse whose public appearances to accept an award or an honorary degree counted as important news simply because of their rarity. On such occasions she did not speak, other than to say a brief thank you. In Feb. 2015, her publisher, Harper, an imprint of HarperCollins, dropped a bombshell. It announced plans to publish a manuscript, long thought to be lost, that Lee submitted to her editors in 1957 under the title “Go Set a Watchman.” Lee#39;s lawyer, Tonja B. Carter, had chanced upon it, attached to an original typescript of “To Kill a Mockingbird,” while looking through Lee#39;s papers, the publishers explained. It told the story of Atticus and Scout 20 years later, when Scout is a young woman living in New York, and included several scenes in which Atticus expresses conservative views on race relations seemingly at odds with his liberal stance in the earlier novel.2015年2月,她的出版商、哈珀柯林斯出版社旗下的哈珀宣布了一个令人震惊的消息。 The book was published in July with an initial printing of 2 million and, with enormous advance sales, immediately leapt to the top of the fiction best-seller lists, despite tepid reviews. The book soared miles above such criticisms. By the late 1970s “To Kill a Mockingbird” had sold nearly 10 million copies, and in 1988 the National Council of Teachers of English reported that it was being taught in 74 percent of the nation#39;s secondary schools. A decade later Library Journal declared it the best novel of the 20th century. (National Council of Teachers of English)报告称,这本小说被美国74%的中学用作教材。 Nelle Harper Lee was born in the poky little town of Monroeville, in southern Alabama, the youngest of four children. “Nelle” was a backward spelling of her maternal grandmother#39;s first name, and Lee dropped it when “To Kill a Mockingbird” was published, out of fear that ers would pronounce it Nellie, which she hated. Her father, Asa Coleman Lee, was a prominent lawyer and the model for Atticus Finch, who shared his stilted diction and lofty sense of civic duty. Her mother, Frances Finch Lee, also known as Miss Fanny, was overweight and emotionally fragile. Truman Capote, a friend of Lee#39;s from childhood, later said that Nelle#39;s mother had tried to drown her in the bathtub on two occasions, an assertion that Lee indignantly denied. Lee was a tough little tomboy who enjoyed beating up the local boys, climbing trees and rolling in the dirt. “A dress on the young Nelle would have been as out of place as a silk hat on a hog,” recalled Marie Rudisill, Capote#39;s aunt, in her book “Truman Capote: The Story of His Bizarre and Exotic Boyhood by an Aunt Who Helped Raise Him.” 卡波特的姨妈玛丽·鲁迪西尔(Marie Rudisill)在自己的书《杜鲁门·卡波特:帮助养育他的姨妈讲述他奇特的童年》(Truman Capote: The Story of His Bizarre and Exotic Boyhood by an Aunt Who Helped Raise Him)中回忆说:“小内尔穿上连衣裙就像猪戴上大礼帽一样格格不入。”One boy on the receiving end of Nelle#39;s thrashings was Truman Persons (later Capote), who spent several summers next door to Nelle with relatives. The two became fast friends, acting out adventures from “The Rover Boys” and, after Nelle#39;s father gave the two children an old Underwood typewriter, making up their own stories to dictate to each other. Capote later wrote Nelle into his first book, “Other Voices, Other Rooms,” where she appears as the tomboy Idabel Tompkins. She made a repeat appearance as Ann Finchburg, nicknamed Jumbo, in his story “The Thanksgiving Visitor.” Lee returned the favor, casting Capote in the role of the little blond tale-spinner Dill in “To Kill a Mockingbird.” (Dill)。Lee attended Huntingdon College, a local Methodist school for women, where she contributed occasional articles to the campus newspaper and two fictional vignettes to the college#39;s literary magazine. After a year at Huntingdon, Lee transferred to the University of Alabama to study law, primarily to please her father. Her own interests, and perhaps her disposition, led her elsewhere. After her senior year, she spent a summer at Oxford University as part of a student-exchange program. On her return from England, she decided to go to New York and become a writer. Lee arrived in Manhattan in 1949 and settled into a cold-water apartment in the East 80s. After working briefly at a bookstore, she found work as a reservations agent, first for Eastern Airlines and later for BOAC. At night she wrote on a desk made from a door. The local colony of displaced Southerners regarded her askance. “We didn#39;t think she was up to much,” recalled Louise Sims, the wife of the saxophonist Zoot Sims. “She said she was writing a book, and that was that.”1949年,李来到曼哈顿,住在East 80s一个只提供冷水的公寓里。 Editors at Lippincott told Lee that her manuscript like a string of anecdotes, not a novel, but encouraged her to revise. Eventually they paid a small advance and assigned her to work with Tay Hohoff, an experienced editor with whom she developed a close working and personal relationship. Signs of its success were visible almost immediately after it was published in July 1960. Both Book-of-the-Month Club and the Literary Guild made the novel one of their selections, and Reader#39;s Digest selected it for publication in condensed form. A week after its publication, it jumped to the top of the best-seller lists; it remained there for 88 weeks.1960年7月,这本小说几乎一出版就显现出成功的迹象。 In one of her last interviews, with a Chicago radio show in 1964, Lee talked in some detail about her literary ambition: to describe, in a series of novels, the world she grew up in and now saw disappearing. “This is small-town middle-class Southern life as opposed to the Gothic, as opposed to `Tobacco Road,#39; as opposed to plantation life,” she told her interviewer, adding that she was fascinated by the “rich social pattern” in such places. “I would simply like to put down all I know about this because I believe that there is something universal in this little world, something decent to be said for it, and something to lament in its passing,” she continued. “In other words, all I want to be is the Jane Austen of South Alabama.”1964年,李在接受芝加哥一家电台采访(那时她最后几次接受采访)时较为详细地讲述了自己的文学志向:用一系列小说讲述她成长过程中经历的如今正在消失的那个世界。 (Jane Austen)。”News of the rediscovery of “Go Set a Watchman” threw the literary world into turmoil. Many critics, as well as friends of Lee, found the timing and the rediscovery story suspicious, and openly questioned whether Lee, who was shielded from the press by Carter, was mentally competent to approve its publication. It remained an open question, for many critics, whether “Go Set a Watchman” was anything more than the initial draft of “To Kill a Mockingbird.” In a statement, Lee, who said that she had assumed the manuscript was lost, wrote, “After much thought and hesitation, I shared it with a handful of people I trust and was pleased to hear that they considered it worthy of publication.” /201602/427506
