In the name of God, the most beneficent, the most merciful。 Honourable UN Secretary General Mr Ban Ki-moon, respected president of the General Assembly Vuk Jeremic, honourable UN envoy for global education Mr Gordon Brown, respected elders and my dear brothers and sisters: Assalamu alaikum。 Today is it an honour for me to be speaking again after a long time. Being here with such honourable people is a great moment in my life and it is an honour for me that today I am wearing a shawl of the late Benazir Bhutto. I don’t know where to begin my speech. I don’t know what people would be expecting me to say, but first of all thank you to God for whom we all are equal and thank you to every person who has prayed for my fast recovery and new life. I cannot believe how much love people have shown me. I have received thousands of good-wish cards and gifts from all over the world. Thank you to all of them. Thank you to the children whose innocent words encouraged me. Thank you to my elders whose prayers strengthened me. I would like to thank my nurses, doctors and the staff of the hospitals in Pakistan and the UK and the UAE government who have helped me to get better and recover my strength。 I fully support UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in his Global Education First Initiative and the work of UN Special Envoy for Global Education Gordon Brown and the respectful president of the UN General Assembly Vuk Jeremic. I thank them for the leadership they continue to give. They continue to inspire all of us to action. Dear brothers and sisters, do remember one thing: Malala Day is not my day. Today is the day of every woman, every boy and every girl who have raised their voice for their rights。 There are hundreds of human rights activists and social workers who are not only speaking for their rights, but who are struggling to achieve their goal of peace, education and equality. Thousands of people have been killed by the terrorists and millions have been injured. I am just one of them. So here I stand, one girl among many. I speak not for myself, but also those without a voice can be heard. Those who have fought for their rights. Their right to live in peace. Their right to be treated with dignity. Their right to equality of opportunity. Their right to be educated。 Dear friends, on 9 October 2012, the Taliban shot me on the left side of my forehead. They shot my friends, too. They thought that the bullets would silence us, but they failed. And out of that silence came thousands of voices. The terrorists thought they would change my aims and stop my ambitions. But nothing changed in my life except this: weakness, fear and hopelessness died. Strength, power and courage was born. I am the same Malala. My ambitions are the same. My hopes are the same. And my dreams are the same. Dear sisters and brothers, I am not against anyone. Neither am I here to speak in terms of personal revenge against the Taliban or any other terrorist group. I am here to speak for the right of education for every child. I want education for the sons and daughters of the Taliban and all the terrorists and extremists. I do not even hate the Talib who shot me。 Even if there was a gun in my hand and he was standing in front of me, I would not shoot him. This is the compassion I have learned from Mohamed, the prophet of mercy, Jesus Christ and Lord Buddha. This the legacy of change I have inherited from Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela and Mohammed Ali Jinnah。 This is the philosophy of nonviolence that I have learned from Gandhi, Bacha Khan and Mother Teresa. And this is the forgiveness that I have learned from my father and from my mother. This is what my soul is telling me: be peaceful and love everyone。 Dear sisters and brothers, we realise the importance of light when we see darkness. We realise the importance of our voice when we are silenced. In the same way, when we were in Swat, the north of Pakistan, we realised the importance of pens and books when we saw the guns. The wise saying, “The pen is mightier than the sword。” It is true. The extremists are afraid of books and pens. The power of education frightens them. They are afraid of women. The power of the voice of women frightens them. This is why they killed 14 innocent students in the recent attack in Quetta. And that is why they kill female teachers. That is why they are blasting schools every day because they were and they are afraid of change and equality that we will bring to our society. And I remember that there was a boy in our school who was asked by a journalist: “Why are the Taliban against education?”He answered very simply by pointing to his book, he said: “A Talib doesn’t know what is written inside this book。” They think that God is a tiny, little conservative being who would point guns at people’s heads just for going to school. These terrorists are misusing the name of Islam for their own personal benefit. Pakistan is a peace-loving, democratic country. Pashtuns want education for their daughters and sons. Islam is a religion of peace, humanity and brotherhood. It is the duty and responsibility to get education for each child, that is what it says. Peace is a necessity for education. In many parts of the world, especially Pakistan and Afghanistan, terrorism, war and conflicts stop children from going to schools. We are really tired of these wars. Women and children are suffering in many ways in many parts of the world。 In India, innocent and poor children are victims of child labour. Many schools have been destroyed in Nigeria. People in Afghanistan have been affected by extremism. Young girls have to do domestic child labour and are forced to get married at an early age. Poverty, ignorance, injustice, racism and the deprivation of basic rights are the main problems, faced by both men and women。 Today, I am focusing on women’s rights and girls’ education because they are suffering the most. There was a time when women activists asked men to stand up for their rights. But this time we will do it by ourselves. I am not telling men to step away from speaking for women’s rights, but I am focusing on women to be independent and fight for themselves. So dear sisters and brothers, now it’s time to speak up. So today, we call upon the world leaders to change their strategic policies in favour of peace and prosperity. We call upon the world leaders that all of these deals must protect women and children’s rights. A deal that goes against the rights of women is unacceptable。 We call upon all governments to ensure free, compulsory education all over the world for every child. We call upon all the governments to fight against terrorism and violence. To protect children from brutality and harm. We call upon the developed nations to support the expansion of education opportunities for girls in the developing world. We call upon all communities to be tolerant, to reject prejudice based on caste, creed, sect, colour, religion or agenda to ensure freedom and equality for women so they can flourish. We cannot all succeed when half of us are held back. We call upon our sisters around the world to be brave, to embrace the strength within themselves and realise their full potential。 Dear brothers and sisters, we want schools and education for every child’s bright future. We will continue our journey to our destination of peace and education. No one can stop us. We will speak up for our rights and we will bring change to our voice. We believe in the power and the strength of our words. Our words can change the whole world because we are all together, united for the cause of education. And if we want to achieve our goal, then let us empower ourselves with the weapon of knowledge and let us shield ourselves with unity and togetherness。 Dear brothers and sisters, we must not forget that millions of people are suffering from poverty and injustice and ignorance. We must not forget that millions of children are out of their schools. We must not forget that our sisters and brothers are waiting for a bright, peaceful future。 So let us wage a glorious struggle against illiteracy, poverty and terrorism, let us pick up our books and our pens, they are the most powerful weapons. One child, one teacher, one book and one pen can change the world. Education is the only solution. Education first. Thank you。 /201410/335285

On Dec. 5, 1952, a thick layer of fog settled over the streets of London, blanketing the city. This was no ordinary wintery mist, but rather a noxious haze of sulfur dioxide from coal-fired industrial factories and cookstoves in London homes. London#39;s Great Smog hung in the air for five consecutive days; visibility was reduced to mere feet and cars were abandoned or led off the road by police with traffic flares. It was the ;nation#39;s worst air pollution disaster; and remains the deadliest smog event on record. According to the Telegraph, the devastation the smog wrought ;only became apparent when undertakers reported that they were running out of coffins and florists had sold all their flowers.; In the following three months, an estimated 13,000 people died of respiratory complications. The hazy scenes of London#39;s Great Smog bear a striking resemblence to modern-day images of China#39;s urban centers on their most polluted days. And though China has never had an event to match those four days in London, its pollution problem is persistent and pervasive. In 2010, air pollution contributed to 1.2 million deaths in China. Between 1981 and 2001, particulate levels in its major cities were five times greater than what the ed States experienced before 1970. And the problem is worsening at an incredible rate. In 2009, the concentration of particulate pollution in the Chinese city of Harbin averaged 101 micrograms per meter, according to the World Health Organization. Four years later, in October 2013, levels were up tenfold, a new record. This week, Gina McCarthy, the new head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), said she would be meeting with partners in China in the coming days to address air pollution issues, but was careful to stress that this is not an challenge limited to China. The West, too, has faced hazardous pollution. ;We have been there before,; she said on Monday, Dec. 2. The comparison bears consideration; what follows is a series of photo pairings -- smog in London then, and in China now. London#39;s Great Smog rolled into city#39;s streets on a ;mass of cold air,; and remained, trapped by a layer of warmer air above. PM 2.5 -- the mass, in micrograms, of particles larger than 2.5 micrometers in a cubic centimeter, a common measure of hazardous air pollution -- rocketed to 1,600, a record China has yet to approach even on its worst days. Perhaps the closest China has come was the smog that settled over Harbin, a city of 10 million people in northeast China, in October. As PM 2.5 climbed to 1,000, the city effectively shut down, closing schools, airports, and highways. The Great Smog of 1952 prompted Britain#39;s 1956 Clean Air Act, which led to legislation in the ed States. In New York, in particular, pollution had become a major problem: particularly deadly clouds of smog were blamed for 200 deaths in 1963 and 168 more in 1966. These events were pivotal in motivating Congress to establish the EPA and pass landmark clean air laws. Like China today, most of that pollution was caused by burning coal and, to a lesser extent, by heavy traffic in cities like Los Angeles.1952年烟雾事件后,英国颁布了《1956大气净化法》,进而也促进了美国的相关立法。 ;We know what planning can do,; McCarthy said of the EPA#39;s work with China. ;We know there are many ways in which you can engage your states, and in China#39;s case provinces, to bring a sense of urgency to this issue.;提及环境保护署与中国的合作,麦卡锡表示:“我们知道什么方案行得通,也有很多适用于中国及其问题省份的解决措施,以便提高对此问题的紧迫感。”;I am hopeful,; she said. ;One of the reasons I am hopeful is that I know what we#39;ve been able to accomplish in the ed States.;她还说:“我很有信心。 /201312/268697

Recently, Cheng Li had to block another friend on his WeChat account who constantly shared links to various health tips. “At first, they looked useful, but now they’re just cliched,” said Cheng, 22, a Beijing-based reporter. In fact, Cheng is not the only one who has to endure such bombardments on social media platforms, from intimate couple selfies, photos of meals, to bag sales and if-you-don’t-share-this-bad-things-will-happen links.“起初,这些信息看起来很有用,但现在看来都只是些老生常谈罢了。” Let’s just say that while sharing is indeed a virtue, oversharing, especially on social media platforms, can not only sour friendships but also hurt career prospects. Experts advise people to maintain a good balance between their private life and their professional life, between sharing and showing off, and between goodwill and annoyances. But it’s a tricky business. Feng Shanshan, 20, an economics major at the University of International Business and Economics, feels frustrated when she checks her WeChat only to see photos from her friends eating in fancy restaurants or enjoying exotic trips and exciting events. “It feels like I’m a failure with hardly any highlights in my life,” said Feng.20岁的冯珊珊(音译)是对外经济贸易大学经济学专业的一名学生。 Zhang Yijun, a Shanghai-based psychologist, says this is a common reaction. But the truth is that the information shared online is designed to construct a certain illusion of reality. “Deep down, sharing anything is showing off,” said Zhang. “But when we see the best side of everyone’s life in such a fragmented way, we tend to connect the pieces and think of them as reality, which can cause an anxiety of missing out or being left out.”“实际上,任何分享行为都是一种炫耀,”张怡筠表示。 Friendship and career at stake危及友情和事业Chen Canrui, a psychologist at South China Normal University, says oversharing online undermines effective communication in real life. “Having such easy access to so many people makes communication really superficial,” said Chen. “In the end, the lack of deep communication hurts strong social connections, namely friends, more than weak connections.”“如此轻而易举地接触到这么多的人,使得沟通交流变得流于表面,”陈灿锐说道。 Not only friendships are at stake in the era of oversharing, but career prospects could also be at risk if a good balance between private life and professional life is not maintained. “Companies don’t care if you’re oversharing photos of a Habitat for Humanity house you helped build,” Vinda Rao Souza, marketing manager at Bullhorn, a US recruitment software company, told Glassdoor, a US-based job recruitment website. “But they will care if you’re sharing your innermost thoughts on political matters or if you throw around racial epithets.” “The biggest thing is to make sure you are aware of the privacy settings and use them,” Pamela Skillings, co-founder of US-based job coaching firm Skillful Communications, told Glassdoor. “You don’t have to give up social media, but you have to understand that what’s available publicly can hurt the professional side of your life.” Are you an oversharer?你是“分享控”吗?With the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) compelling us to update our sharing apps every 15 minutes, we easily become culprits of oversharing annoying contents, ranging from showing off to chicken soup for the soul. Eat your broccoli, it#39;s good for you. More specifically--and not incidentally if you live in China--it can apparently help your body better deal with air pollution. According to a study published this week by the journal Cancer Prevention Research, an experiment conducted in eastern China#39;s Jiangsu province found that feeding villagers beverages concocted from broccoli sprouts had various salutary effects, including helping the body to more speedily eliminate ingested air pollutants. The study was conducted by researchers from John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, as well as the University of Minnesota#39;s Masonic Cancer Center, among others.《癌症预防研究》(Cancer Prevention Research)期刊本周发布的一项研究称,在中国东部江苏省进行的一项试验发现,让村民饮用西兰花芽调制的饮料好处多多,其中包括帮助身体更迅速地排除吸入的空气污染物。 The beverage--essentially a tea made out of boiled sprouts--was provided daily for 12 weeks to 291 adults as part of a randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial. Study participants were drawn from the rural township of Hehe in the Yangtze River delta region, an area researchers chose in part because of its heavy levels of air pollution, something that they say is associated with a higher risk for lung and heart disease. Though the delta region, which includes Shanghai, comprises just 2% of China#39;s total area, it contributes at least 15% of its countrywide greenhouse gas emissions, they note. 15%。Can diet really help change your susceptibility to pollution? According to researchers, eating broccoli sprouts #39;enhances the detoxication of some airborne pollutants and may provide a frugal means to attenuate their associated long-term health risks.#39;饮食真的可以改变机体受污染影响的程度吗? That said, it#39;s obviously no cure-all for those living under China#39;s smoggy skies. #39;The ultimate answer [to China#39;s pollution] lies in Beijing with the policymakers,#39; said Thomas Kensler, who holds professorships at John Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health as well as the University of Pittsburgh and was the leader of the study. Still, Mr. Kensler said he is hopeful that more research can help further explore the ways diet might be able to help people strengthen their resistance to pollution. #39;We think this can contribute to potential solutions,#39; he said. If you#39;re not someone who keeps a y supply of broccoli sprouts at home, Mr. Kensler notes that regular broccoli sold at supermarkets also contains the key molecule, sulforaphane, though in considerably lower quantities. #39;The more bitter your broccoli, perhaps the better,#39; he said, adding that one would have to consume roughly 150 grams of broccoli in order to consume the same amount of sulforaphane contained in three grams of broccoli sprouts. The study wasn#39;t without its mild hiccups: according to the paper, #39;unacceptable taste and mild stomach discomfort were the common complaints.#39; Researchers said the addition of pineapple juice and lime juice, though, helped mask some of the less appealing aspects of the broccoli flavor. /201406/305910

Men are more likely than women to marry someone they feel is not quite right for them, debunking the myth that women will do anything for a ring - and that men, on the other hand, will do anything to shun commitment. The recent Singles in America survey by Match.com - which also drew attention to the sexual differences between political persuasions - delivered the surprising results. Of the survey#39;s 5,000 respondents, 31 percent of men, compared to 23 percent of women, admitted they would consider marrying someone who #39;has everything they are looking for in a partner#39; but with whom they weren#39;t in love. 21 percent of men went even further, confessing that they would commit to someone they weren#39;t sexually attracted to.21%的男性甚至承认他们会和对自己没有性吸引力的女人结婚。Contrary to what popular culture suggests - which lady hasn#39;t sympathised with Bridget Jones, or laughed at 27 Dresses? - men, young men in particular, are only too happy to settle. Whether it is a resignation to believing there may never be #39;the one#39; or a case of domestic pragmatism, men are willing to commit and live a life with a woman they feel is not 100 percent ideal. Counter-intuitively, the urge to marry was even stronger for men in their twenties than for those in their thirties and rose again for men in their forties. The apparent resignation among men to marry for the sake of marrying - and the company, support and security it offers - rather than for love and true attraction does not come as news to some men. Tom Fant, a healthcare consultant in New York, told the Daily Beast: #39;The idea of being alone in life can be so overwhelming. Soul crushing for some. #39;Men certainly aren#39;t immune to it, even if most of us like to pretend that we are too strong to be scared, lonely, or, even worse, insecure.#39;“虽然大多数男人都喜欢假装自己很坚强,坚强到无所畏惧,不会寂寞,也不会有不安全感,但男人对此确实没有免疫力。” /201403/280006
