Ian Schrager, the Bronx-born, Brooklyn-raised hotelier, will unveil his latest property, the New York Edition, in the landmark Metropolitan Life Tower on Madison Avenue on May 11.5月11日,布朗克斯出生、布鲁克林长大的酒店经营人伊恩·施拉格(Ian Schrager)揭幕了自己的最新地产——纽约艾迪逊酒店(New York Edition)。 Mr. Schrager, who first came to prominence with Studio 54 in the 1970s, is collaborating with Marriott International on Edition brand hotels. There are three — in London, Istanbul and Miami Beach — and soon there will be one in West Hollywood, Calif.70年代,施拉格凭借Studio 54俱乐部声名鹊起。 “We have a bunch of Editions going all over the place, some in China and one in Reykjavik, Iceland,” said Mr. Schrager, the creative force behind some of the world’s most stylish hotels, including Morgans in New York, the Sanderson in London, the Delano in Miami Beach and the Mondrian in Los Angeles.“我们正在世界各地修建一批艾迪逊酒店,在中国有几家,在冰岛的雷克雅未克也有一家,”施拉格说。 (Mondrian)。His book “Ian Schrager: Works” was released earlier this month. Following are edited excerpts from an interview with him at his new hotel.5月初,他发布了新书《伊恩·施拉格:作品》(Ian Schrager: Works)。 Q. What can you tell us about the new Edition? It’s inspired by New York City’s turn-of-the-20th-century private clubs, Fifth Avenue’s Gilded Age mansions and Stanford White’s architectural masterpieces. Guests come into a dark oak-paneled foyer, like an upscale New York apartment building in the 1920s. It’s a fusion of old and modern. We have this sculptural spiral staircase. We are still in this neutral palette of taupes, ivory and white. But this is probably the last time we’ll do a neutral palette. Neutrals are one of your signatures. Why the change? 为什么要改变呢?I think I’ve taken it as far as it can go. It will still be simple. A quiet luxury. A new luxury. The sensibility will not change. But the second New York Edition [in Times Square; scheduled to open in 2017] will be black and white. We don’t want to run the risk of repeating. Why alter a successful formula? 问:换掉一种成功的配方原因何在呢?I have to keep moving and reinventing myself. Because I am in the theater business, I have to keep pulling rabbits out of a hat. I don’t want to have a “look.” I’ve done three or four hotels with this kind of design vocabulary for different cities. How are you mixing old with new at the Madison Avenue hotel? We will have pops of color on seat cushions, and maybe an ornate Baroque mirror. We want to take a little bit of the decorative ornateness we have on the second floor and bring it down to the lobby, but still be simple. When we did Gramercy Park Hotel we had Julian [Schnabel] do the lobby and he’s a maximalist, and we had John Pawson do the apartments and he is a minimalist, but to me they work together in spirit. The New York Edition seems to have a relaxed, laid-back vibe. The whole idea is to have it feel like you are staying in the guest room of a private home, rather than a hotel room. The [30-foot-long, hand-forged] steel fireplace in the lobby is very personal to me. The idea came right out of my apartment. In the rooms, you can see my bed, but it’s higher, and has a classic motif, English library. This [points to a lamp] comes out of my house in Southampton. I love the room. This is my aesthetic. This is my sensibility. You can’t really improve on this as far as I’m concerned. Will there be a night life and bar component? Yes, there’ll be a restaurant on the second floor overlooking Madison Square Park, by London’s hottest young chef, Jason Atherton. We have three intimate dining rooms — each room only fits about 30 people — a parlor with a billiard table and a library serving cocktails. Each room has its own color and theme, with velvet chairs and banquettes in rose, green and blue, and modernist, large chandeliers. What’s different with hotels from when you started? 问:它跟你最初推出的那些酒店有什么不同?I think the distinction between personal life and business life is kind of blurry now. The new generation business hotel is where you network and do business, in the same way you went to play golf at a golf club in the country, but at a city business hotel. You had a very positive response to Miami Beach Edition. Is it a hard act to follow? Miami was kind of a spectacle and had so much muscle behind it — an outdoor area, a skating rink, a nightclub — we don’t have that here. I was concerned about it. I didn’t want it to be a letdown. I wanted New York to be a jewel box. To be really sophisticated and it is. It has a modern sensibility even though some of the things here are more than 100 years old. It doesn’t have a look, it has a sensibility. It’s a cool place, playful with young energy. What is young now? Young at heart. I’m 68! If you are lucky you don’t lose that. On October 1, 1999 the 13th National Day military parade was held. Can Barnes amp; Noble Challenge Amazon's eBook Empire?Barnes amp; Noble, the beleaguered (饱受批评的)online bookstore, opened its eBook store yesterday. That, by itself would be a major news story, but Bamp;N also announced that it has partnered with Plastic Logic, which is expected to release a highly anticipated Kindle competitor soon. For now, eBooks bought through Bamp;N can be on PCs and Macs, as well as on iPhones and Blackberries. While iPhone and Blackberry apps are nice, though, no eBook vendor can really compete with Amazon without a good hardware eReader that is integrated closely with an eBook store. Given that Bamp;N seems to have all of the necessary pieces in place, however, we think that the the company can indeed challenge Amazon, especially given that it offers a larger selection of books and plans to offer a device that is more open than Amazon's Kindle.Nice Mobile and Desktop Apps - But the Plastic Logic eReader is What It's All AboutWe tested the iPhone app yesterday, and it is indeed a very capable eReader app. It especially stands out because it gives users the ability to customize(定制,定做) everything from background and text colors, to what gesture users prefer to switch pages (swipe or tap), as well as line spacing(行间隔), font size(字体大小), and margins(边缘). The desktop app, which we tested on a Windows PC, is also very usable(可用的) and customizable, but doesn't feel quite as elegant as the iPhone app. While the apps are good, though, the Bamp;N eBook store will only be able to really live up to its potential once the company starts to sell the Plastic Logic eReader. While the Kindle is a great device, there can be no doubt that the design is a bit clunky(沉闷的金属声). The Plastic Logic er, however, looks quite slick, and thanks to its touchscreen(触摸屏), it also offers a sought-after (广受欢迎的)capability that the Kindle currently doesn't offer. In order to compete with Amazon, though, Bamp;N will have to sell the Plastic Logic er at a price that compares well with Amazon's Kindles.Wireless Store? One feature that makes the Kindle stand out from its current competition is the ability to buy and download books wirelessly directly from the device. According to Plastic Logic, the company's eReader will also be able to transfer information wirelessly, though it is not quite clear if this will mean that Bamp;N will partner with a wireless provider, yet. If Bamp;N and Plastic Logic decide against this, though, this could give users an important reason to shun Bamp;N's eReader/eBook store combo. Can Barnes amp; Noble Compete with Amazon? In the perfect world, it wouldn't make a difference whether you prefer a Plastic Logic er, a Sony Reader, a Kindle, or an iRex iLiad. The Kindle has shown (and so did the iPod before it) that having full control over the hardware and content typically results in a more convenient and attractive package for consumers. In the long run, this will probably (hopefully?) change, but for now, we think Bamp;N is doing the right thing by copying this model for its eBook store, though we will have to wait until the roll-out of the Plastic Logic eReader and how consumers react to it before we can really render a final verdict(交付最终宣判).As Bamp;N decided not to compete on price (it sells most eBooks for the same .99 as Amazon and also offers free samples for every book, as well as a selection of books for under ), the quality of the hardware, the number of available books, the openness of the store, and the quality of Bamp;N's service in general will be the areas where the company will have to stand out. Given what we have seen so far, we think that Barnes amp; Noble might indeed be able to challenge Amazon's position in this market, especially given that we are still in the early days of the eBook and only a few consumers have picked sides at this point, and even fewer have actually bought an eReader yet. /200907/78684

SEVEN years ago Beijing’s government set a target of making the city a “liveable” one by 2020, with “fresh air and a beautiful environment”. Few praise its progress. Complaints abound about its congestion, pollution, desperate shortage of water and hugely expensive housing. Even in the state-controlled media, suggestions are sometimes made that it is time to build a new capital. Beijing has been China’s capital for most of the past 600 years. Since the Communist victory in 1949, the Chinese have been taught to revere the city as an embodiment of China’s power, the party’s might and their country’s glorious history. To propose a move strikes many as heretical. In recent years, however, some have broken ranks. In 2000 even China’s then prime minister, Zhu Rongji, joined the sceptics. The capital, he declared, might have to move if measures to curb its sandstorms failed. Since then officials have claimed some success in reducing the frequency of these lung-clogging calamities. But other problems have grown. Beijingers fed up with traffic gridlock sometimes pronounce the word shoudu, meaning capital, in a different tone so that it sounds like “the most congested”. For much of the year a grey blanket of pollutants shrouds the city. The rate of birth defects has doubled over the past decade. The environment is thought to be a contributory factor. Several scholars have suggested, in newspapers as well as online, that these and other problems would best be solved by relocating the central government. Yet apart from Mr Zhu, officials have kept quiet on the subject. Hu Xingdou of the Beijing Institute of Technology says there has been no official response to an open letter he wrote to the Chinese leadership in 2006. In it he suggested that the capital should be built anew in central China. Mr Hu says this position would have the advantage of being harder to attack (he sees Beijing as perilously exposed to assault from the sea). The building of a new and much smaller capital, he says, could also send a positive political message: that the party has turned its back on Beijing’s “feudal” past and embraced small government. Mr Hu proposes to call it Zhongjing, or “central capital” (Beijing means the northern one). Yuan Gang of Peking University describes Beijing as a city of “special privileges” that is literally sucking neighbouring regions dry. He says the billions of dollars now being spent to channel water from China’s south to the arid north around Beijing could have been better spent moving the capital to where the water is. The first of these diversion schemes is due to be launched next year, but the extra water provided will still be far from enough to satisfy Beijing’s demand. The resident population of Beijing, including its rural areas and satellite towns, reached 20m last year. Even with the increase in supply, the city would have adequate water resources only for a population of 18.3m, says the city’s Commission of Population and Family Planning (see chart). Beijing’s bureaucrats are unlikely to be persuaded. Their privileges, common to all those registered as Beijing citizens (ie, not migrants from other provinces), include ier access than most other Chinese have to some of the country’s best educational and medical facilities. Some local officials in places favoured by scholars as potential capital sites have been proclaiming their merits. But given the allure of Beijing’s amenities, it is little wonder that the central authorities keep quiet. /201301/219204Save an emergency fund. Many people use their credit cards as a sort of emergency fund — if there’s an unexpected expense, the card comes out to the rescue. Instead, use the money you aren’t paying towards debt to build up a healthy emergency fund, keeping you out of debt when something unexpected comes up. Living without credit can be risky, but having a strong emergency fund (aim for ,000 initially, then build it up to 3-6 months or more of expenses). 1. /201005/103378

You can spot them prowling the streets of Mexico City#39;s wealthy enclaves in sports cars. The guys wear their hair slicked back and designer shirts with the top three buttons open. The women have expensive bags and sunglasses. They are nearly always followed by a black SUV packed with armed bodyguards. They are known in Mexico as #39;Juniors#39;─the sons and daughters of the country#39;s elite, young people whose love of brand names is surpassed only by their sense of entitlement. Juniors grow up to dominate the upper echelons of business and politics. They live behind high walls, travel in private jets and seem utterly untouchable─and out of touch in a country that struggles with poverty and violence. For the first time, though, Mexico#39;s Juniors are coming under fire. In April, Andrea Benitez, the daughter of a well-connected politician, turned up at a trendy restaurant in Mexico City without a reservation and threw a fit when she was not given the table she wanted. So she called inspectors at Profeco, the government#39;s consumer protection agency─which happened to be run by her father. Inspectors promptly shut down the restaurant. What Ms. Benitez didn#39;t count on was Mexico#39;s growing middle class, which is fast developing an intolerance of Juniors and using social media to do something about it. Within hours, she and her father became the targets of a furious campaign on Twitter, where users dubbed her #LadyProfeco. Within weeks, her father─a friend of President Enrique Pe#241;a Nieto─was forced to resign. The Lady tag has become shorthand for viral s that highlight the misbehavior of Mexico#39;s coddled elites. #LadiesDePolanco, a uploaded to YouTube in 2011, showed two drunken young women in Mexico City#39;s posh Polanco neighborhood insulting police who pulled them over for a traffic violation. The women scream at the police, calling them #39;salary men,#39; and drive off. The caused such an outrage that the women were later identified, paid a fine and publicly apologized.“女士”这个标签已经成为了在网上疯狂传播的、展示墨西哥骄纵精英们不当行为的视频的代名词。 Some Juniors are getting into trouble by putting too much on Facebook about their luxurious lifestyles. Last year, local newspapers ran pictures of the daughter of the head of the country#39;s oil workers union traveling the world in private jets with her three bulldogs, Keiko, Boli and Morgancita. The photos, taken from her Facebook page, caused an outrage, prompting her to close the account. #39;The rich in this country act like they own the place, and they really do own it. They are hardly ever held accountable. So this is something totally new,#39; says Guadalupe Loaeza, a novelist who has made her career writing about Juniors. #39;We have a long way to go, but it#39;s a start.#39;小说家瓜达卢佩#8226;洛蕾萨(Guadalupe Loaeza)表示:“从墨西哥有钱人的所作所为看,就好像他们主宰着这个地方,而事实也的确如此。 In recent weeks, Mexicans have filled theaters to see a new comedy about Juniors. #39;Nosotros Los Nobles#39; (or #39;We the Nobility#39;) deals with a wealthy self-made man and his three ne#39;er-do-well children, 20-somethings who live high on daddy#39;s bank account. So daddy stages a hoax to make them think he#39;s gone bankrupt, forcing the family to move into a low-income barrio. There, the kids must do something they have never done before: Get real jobs. Scenes of hilarity ensue as Javi, the eldest son who bemoans that his #39;black [Amex] and Black[Berry]#39; have been canceled, gets work driving a minibus on Mexico City#39;s chaotic streets. The daughter, aptly named Barbie, gets work as a waitress in a rough cantina. When told that the staff shares tips, she whines, #39;But we#39;re not in Cuba!#39; And the youngest son, who dabbles in Buddhism and yoga, becomes the lowest form of capitalist: a bank teller, taking orders from a sex-starved female boss. In the movie, redemption comes when the three learn to live like ordinary Mexicans. Barbie settles down with the darker-skinned Lucho, the nephew of her childhood nanny. For many Mexicans, seeing the light-skinned Barbie pick Lucho is akin to the shock Americans had seeing Sidney Poitier come through the door in the 1967 comedy #39;Guess Who#39;s Coming to Dinner.#39;在电影中,当这三个年轻人学会了像普通的墨西哥人那样生活之后,生活也带来了回报。 The movie has become the biggest domestic box-office hit in Mexican movie history. It has sold 6.8 million tickets and is still going strong. That#39;s aly well ahead of the previous record of 5.2 million for the 2002 movie #39;El Crimen del Padre Amaro.#39; Warner Brothers has bought the rights for a U.S. remake. #39;The social compass is shifting to a consensus that the way these people behave is not honorable and not cool,#39; says Gary Alazraki, the 35-year-old screenwriter and director behind the movie.35岁的加里#8226;阿拉斯瑞奇(Gary Alazraki)是《我们是贵族》的编剧兼导演。 Mr. Alazraki is himself a recovering Junior whose father is probably Mexico#39;s most successful advertising executive. Gary began to change during his college days at the University of Southern California, where he dated a girl who #39;was not impressed by entitled kids who had daddy#39;s credit card.#39; He decided to stop living off an allowance and started to work. When he returned to Mexico, his father wanted him and his brother to live at home. Like many self-made men, his father wanted to spare his children the struggles of doing without. #39;My dad was like, #39;We have a maid, a full fridge, we#39;ll wash your clothes. Why put yourself through that, split up your family like that?#39; I said that…I don#39;t want to be comfortable. My competitors who are going to make it are struggling today, and if I#39;m not struggling as they are…nothing will push me.#39;“我父亲说,‘我们有女佣,还有塞得满满当当的冰箱,有人会帮你们洗衣。 Gary drifted apart from his Junior friends, growing more appalled at their behavior. #39;At the end of this whole process, I just knew I had to take them down,#39; he says. He#39;s aly working on a sequel. There are other signs of change. A website set up in 2011 to mock Juniors─Mirrreybook.com (a play on Facebook and the words #39;Mi Rey,#39; or #39;My King,#39; which many upper-class Mexican parents call their sons)─has 87,000 followers on Facebook and other sites. #39;We made the site to make fun of them, but quickly realized many of them wanted to be on the site, as a recognition of their status,#39; says Pepe Ceballos, a 30-year-old entrepreneur. A few weeks ago, Jorge Emilio Gonzalez, the head of Mexico#39;s Green Party, was pulled over for drunken driving. One of Mexico#39;s most renowned Juniors, Mr. Gonzalez inherited the party from his dad at age 29 and is universally known here as #39;El Ni#241;o Verde,#39; or #39;The Green Boy,#39; despite the fact that he#39;s now 41. Mr. Gonzalez, driving a black Mercedes, told police he had drunk #39;only four tequilas,#39; according to officers at the scene. He declined to take a breathalyzer test and gave a fake name. Then two of his armed bodyguards offered the four policemen 0 each to let him go. When that didn#39;t work, the bodyguards tried to free El Ni#241;o Verde by force. #39;You don#39;t know who you#39;re messing with,#39; Mr. Gonzalez yelled at police as they bundled him into the patrol car, patrolman Antonio Caracheo recounted to newspapers. The arrest became front-page news, sparking renewed controversy when it emerged that Mr. Gonzalez#39;s lawyer was able to spring him after only a few hours─well short of the full day called for by law. Mr. Gonzalez sheepishly returned to do his time. A Mexico City lawmaker nominated Mr. Caracheo, 32, for a police medal. /201306/245705

Many fathers these days want it all -- time with kids, promotions at work and a spouse who shares the parenting duties. But some say they would trade in their commute and office gig for a stay-at-home role. With Father's Day just around the corner, a new study surveying nearly 1,000 fathers in the ed States working at Fortune 500 firms takes a look at just how hard it is for dads to balance their work and life goals. The study titled "The New Dad: Caring, Committedand Conflicted" was unveiled on Wednesday by the Boston College Center for Work amp;Family. Dads have long been celebrated fortheir role as bwinner in the family. Now the top priority of men with children under the age of 18 still living at home is the softer side of being a father -- providing love and support. More than half of all fathers surveyed said they would consider not working outside the home if the family was able to live comfortably on one salary, a surprising change in perception, said Brad Harrington, executive director of the center. That does not mean dads are not putting family first. Job security was overwhelmingly important to fathers, the study showed, with high earnings and advancement taking a back seat. /201106/141033
