SEACREST: Congratulations to Taylor Hicks, the new American idol.TAYLOR HICKS, WINNER OF "AMERICAN IDOL" FIFTH SEASON: Feeling great.SEACREST: Has it sunk in yet, Taylor?HICKS: I've been on a press tour, we both have, for about 48 hours now and, yes, I mean slowly as things start slowing down I start realizing it and it's pretty amazing stuff.SEACREST: And, Kat (ph), you talk about the bubble that all of you live in during the series. How do you feel now being the runner- up, which is a huge accomplishment?KATHARINE MCPHEE, RUNNER-UP "AMERICAN IDOL" SEASON FIVE: A huge accomplishment. I feel fantastic. Yesterday was a little weird. First of all, I only had about 45 minutes of sleep.JACKSON: Wow!MCPHEE: Between the finale and...SEACREST: Is that right, 45 minutes of sleep?MCPHEE: Forty-five minutes of sleep between the finale and when we started our press very early in the morning. And I just -- it was weird because my day was over at 2:30 yesterday. I know Taylor's was a little bit longer. But I was like, all right, well I guess I'll just sleep. It was just weird, you know.JACKSON: Par for the course.MCPHEE: The bubble has now officially been popped so the world is at our fingertips.SEACREST: Well, Randy, how would you now looking back on the season assess what these two have accomplished?JACKSON: I just want to say congratulations to both you guys. I mean you guys are definitely two of my favorites. And, I think, you know, at the beginning of the season, you know, we see all these kids, Ryan. You're out on the road with us and you really never know. But I must say we're really happy because he was so different. We'd never seen anything like him. And she, I don't know if she knows this, she was really different for us too, reason being we've never had a great contestant from L.A.SEACREST: Yes.JACKSON: This is where we live. Oh, my god, California, come on and we were like shocked.SEACREST: You know it's interesting because you come from different backgrounds, different parts of the U.S., Taylor from a smaller town in Alabama. By the way, Alabama, lots of idols coming out of Bama.HICKS: Yes, it's...SEACREST: (INAUDIBLE).HICKS: Yes.SEACREST: (INAUDIBLE).JACKSON: Ham and the ham is putting it down.HICKS: Interesting, you know.SEACREST: Of course, Sherman Oaks, a part of Los Angeles.MCPHEE: Yes.SEACREST: Do you think that that was a plus or a minus, a pro or a con being from a big city on "American Idol" Kat? MCPHEE: I think it might have definitely played against me a little bit. I mean I don't want to go into any negative because, look it, I mean I got this far and obviously people were voting for me. But, you know, it's just different coming from especially not only, I mean it would be different with like Chicago or Boston but L.A., you know, this is like where everybody comes to become famous and I was born here, so it's just different.HICKS: Well, you know what, you're famous now.JACKSON: Absolutely, that's right. And you know, listen, it was special for us though with saying that we still every season didn't find anybody great from L.A. And you know there's somebody great here and when you showed up we couldn't believe it though. We couldn't believe it. We couldn't. Dude, I'm serious.MCPHEE: Oh, thanks Randy.SEACREST: I know for a fact the judges when they would see Los Angeles on the audition schedule they would say, "Oh, we're not going to find" -- everybody's jaded.MCPHEE: Really?(CROSSTALK)JACKSON: Because we haven't been to New York in years.SEACREST: You actually didn't want to go there.JACKSON: Yes, well we hadn't been to New York in a couple years, Ryan's hometown Atlanta we hadn't been in a couple years just because the big cities started giving us kind of more of a little bit of a jaded vibe, you know.MCPHEE: Wow.JACKSON: But it's just amazing to me. That's why I don't know if you remember me asking you "Dud, where you been?" Like what?MCPHEE: Yes, I remember that.SEACREST: And what's the answer?MCPHEE: Oh, gosh.SEACREST: Where were you hiding?MCPHEE: Where have I been hiding? I've been like in the town, so crazy. I just -- I've been, you know, auditioning like every other girl in L.A.SEACREST: Apparently we're having some problems with her microphone with Kat's mike.MCPHEE: Oh.SEACREST: You can -- we'll try and fix that in the break in just a second.MCPHEE: OK.SEACREST: Now, Taylor, in that moment that we saw you are the winner of "American Idol." A beat before I announced your name what was going through your mind"HICKS: Don't fall down. Don't let your legs or your knees buckle. And, then you when you announced it, it was great.SEACREST: And the moments after when you were performing could you even -- is it just too much to take in sensory overload?HICKS: Yes, it's overwhelming, you know, and I wanted to thank the band and all the production staff and everybody behind the scenes that really makes this phenomenon work.200809/49232。

Wild Europe - Genesis 肇始之初- 8 They make perfect roof tiles, but these tiles occasionally reveal something extraordinary. Perfect snapshots from 115 million years ago, back then, Solnhofen was part of a very still and salty tropical lagoon. No scavengers could survive in these toxic waters, but anything that died was left undisturbed. One casualty in particular has made Solnhofen world famous--archaeopteryx. Although it had the head and pelvis of a reptile, the long forelimbs suggest something altogether different. They're covered in feathers. This was part reptile, part bird. Archaeopteryx marks one of the major turning points in evolutionary history. From these beginnings, emerged the 9000 species of birds that fill the skies today. The next great event that Europe experienced took place a hundred million years ago. The clues lie hidden in the famous chalk cliffs of Southern England. Chalk is composed of the shells and skeletons of ancient marine plankton, microscopic creatures, trillions and trillions of them.words and expressionssnapshot: (n.) Scripts:The housing market is aly troubled and the next tsunami might be right around the corner. Resets on ARM, adjustable rate mortgages could set off a new wave of foreclosures. CNN’s personal finance editor Gerri Willis joins us now to offer some advice on how to avoid mortgage reset headaches. And Gerri, first and foremost how big of a problem are we encountering in the industry?Well, I will say it’s a big problem. There’re about 2.3 million subprime borrowers whose home loans are projected to reset at higher rates through the end of next year. Now, that means those low teaser rates may go up a few points resulting in monthly payments. It could be hundreds of dollars more. Now the peak of subprime US mortgage resets will happen next march. Gerri, help us to set a priority at this point, the priorities, What’s the No.1 thing we should all do if you happen to have an adjustable-rate mortgage? Well, get your paperwork. If you have a one, three or five year hybrid ARM, your monthly statement will not tell you, your caps or any other terms of your loan to find out when your rate could adjust and what you’ll be on the hook for. Dig out your adjustable rate rider now. This should be included with your original closing papers. Adjustable rates can adjust annually. Next you’ll wanna look at the caps, these caps, they ah prohibit your interest rates from moving too much in either direction in a given time frame. If you have any questions or you are not sure what you will have to pay, call in our nonprofit counseling organization. To find one in your area, go to HUD.gov.What about refinancing as an option? Who should think about that?Well, sometimes refinancing just isn’t in the cards, especially if your home price has dropped in the last few months. If values haven’t dropped that significantly and you wanna get out of the rate reset, think about refinancing. Refinancing makes sense if you plan to stay in your home for at least another 2 years and you’ll lower your interest rates by at least 1.5 percentage points. In order to refinance, you’ll need 10 to 20 percent equity in your home. For home owners struggling right now to just make the basic payment and then have the adjustable-rate mortgages, is there any help out there for them?Well, right now Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Banking Regulators are working out the details of a plan to extend lower intro-interest rates, those teaser rates on home loans before they are reset at a higher level. A decision could come this week, but remember, this is just a proposal for right now. I’ll bring you the details as they develop. And if you have any questions, please send them to us at toptips@cnn.com. We love hearing from you. 200807/43417。

Iraq: The Defining Difference Between McCain, Obama美国总统候选人激烈辩论伊战问题 The war in Iraq continues to be a sharp point of difference between the two presumptive U.S. presidential nominees, Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain. Campaigning in New Jersey, Senator McCain said voters in this election face a stark choice on the war in Iraq. McCain says the ed States is winning in Iraq, and he strongly opposes Senator Obama's plan to begin troop withdrawals shortly after taking office. He said the surge could not work and would not work, and to this day, to this very day, Senator Obama refuses to acknowledge that we are winning in Iraq," he said. "He refuses. He called it spin. Is General Petraeus spinning the American people? I do not think so. I do not think so." Obama was on the campaign trail Friday in Ohio, usually a key swing state in presidential elections. Obama restated his opposition to the war in Iraq after a voter asked him why the U.S. image abroad has sharply declined in recent years. Everybody supported us after 9/11. Everybody supported us going into Afghanistan. Right? It was not until we decided to go into Iraq, without listening to other countries who warned us that it might be a mistake, and George Bush basically ignored world opinion and the facts that there was no connection between 9/11 and Iraq, that is when world opinion plummeted," he said. The latest campaign jabs on Iraq come at the end of a week of back and forth volleys on the war, which is likely to be a key issue in the November election, along with the weakening U.S. economy. McCain is betting that the American people will be persuaded, ultimately, that no matter how angry they seem to be about what is going on in Iraq, we cannot afford to lose," said Tom DeFrank of the New York Daily News and a frequent guest on VOA's Issues in the News program. "And, I think that Obama is taking the position that we will not lose, but we do not need to have as many troops there as we do at the moment, and with three-quarters of the American people opposed to the war in Iraq, I think that is an issue that works for Obama better than it does for McCain."Iraq and the economy will likely be the focus of presidential debates later this year, but how many debates are held remains an open question. In recent elections, the two major party contenders have taken part in three nationally televised debates, while their vice presidential running mates debate once. Senator McCain has proposed an additional series of 10 town hall meetings in which he and Senator Obama would appear together to answer questions from voters. But the Obama campaign has rejected that idea. An Obama spokesman said the presumed Democratic candidate would be willing to take part in one town hall event with McCain and one foreign policy debate, in addition to the three nationally televised debates scheduled between late September and mid-October. 200806/42012。

It seems fewer and fewer of us are happy with our looks. Plastic surgery operations were up a third last year and today saw a major conference in London of the world's top cosmetic surgeons, for more full news Helene Cacace was there. Plastic surgery is big business; the most common kind of operation in the UK is breast enlargement. We aren't gonna make any cheap gags, I'm here at the annual conference run by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, or BAAPS.They come in all shapes and sizes; breasts just lying about on tables and some real experts, a surgeon who's researched the perfect pair: if I took about a 45:55 percent ratio between upper and lower with a nipple just sitting over the midline and slightly sky with pointing. Perfect breast is a breast that suits an individual, and suits a body, it's harmonious, it's in proportion. Adam Quicky, a man who can give you a breast enlargement in your lunch hour encouraging you to go out to show your new bra size the very same evening. They are usually home within an hour to an hour and a half after the surgery, they take a 2 hour nap, they get up, they take a shower, they do arm stretch exercises and they go to the mall. But the conference isn't only about breasts; there are a huge number of new products on show here, technologically advanced, but somewhat frightening. The device is then placed down through that insition with the tines on it. And facing down into the muscle, those hooked in and then this bit thrown away. And this is then just pulled backwards and suits it to the mastoid fascia. This is the product, it's an injectable dermal filler. It's injected into facial wrinkles. And it's the new, new consistency, I mean, it's very smooth, and easy to inject. And thankfully, patients are telling us that it hurts less as well, which is always a benefit. Behind the silicon stands the matter of unregulated cosmetic products is a worry, with fears that UK patients are being used as Guinea pigs for treatments banned in the US. Our concern is the products which are not examined properly were released on the market in the UK they haven't been tested, they may at best be inefficient and ineffective, but worse they may actually be dangerous. The potential physical damage to women is not the only concern; Philippa Roberts who works for a marketing consultancy that targets women believes the cosmetic industry makes money by playing on women's insecurities. I think that definitely what would be true to say is that there is within the beauty industry, a strand of activity that preys on female under-confident. You know, the physical science of aging, selenite, orange skin signs, all that kind of language is designed to make women feel that they are not great. And that they are not at their best without ex-whiles at product. The Wallet's becoming easier and more acceptable to go under the scalpel. That does seem to be a backlash from cosmetic companies who preys on natural assets. The future is not so plastic -------------------------------------------------------------------------------1.mastoid:adj. Shaped like a female breast. 4.scalpel: n. scalpel is a knife with a short, thin, sharp blade. Scalpels are used by surgeons during operations.200805/39908。

Poll Shows Women Voters Shifting Support to McCain-Palin佩林效应将如何影响美国大选? Republican presidential nominee John McCain has shaken up the race for the White House and pumped new excitement into his campaign by choosing Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin as his vice presidential candidate. Several polls taken after the Republican National Convention show John McCain's popularity ratings are surging upward, and some show him holding a slight lead over his opponent, Barack Obama. One poll in particular may be causing concern for the Obama campaign. A new Washington Post/A News survey finds McCain is now ahead of Obama by 12 points among white women, 53 to 41 percent. 41%。Last month Senator Obama held an eight point lead over McCain among white women voters in the same poll, representing a stunning, 20 point shift among that group. There is similar movement, but not quite as dramatic, in another poll released this week. A new N/Wall Street Journal poll shows Obama's lead among women shrinking from 14 points a month ago to just four points now. 4%。Karlyn Bowman, Senior Fellow with the conservative American Enterprise Institute, and an expert on U.S. politics and public-opinion polls, says it is not clear whether this major shift in opinion will last, but it is clear that a lot of American women can relate to Palin, a 44-year-old mother of five. "But I also think that Sarah Palin connected with a lot of ordinary women voters, with her speech at the convention, with the discussions of her family, and some of the struggles and ups and downs that family has had." Palin emerged at the Republican National Convention as a virtual unknown on the national stage, and her family has played a prominent role in her introduction to the country. She has a five-month-old son with with Down's Syndrome, and a 17-year-old daughter who is pregnant and plans to marry the baby's father. Janice Crouse, with the socially-conservative Christian political action group Concerned Women for America, says she believes a majority of American women will support Palin in the election because they agree with her on important issues. "The majority of American women are very common sense people. You know, they support traditional American values, they know the value of marriage, they know the value of family, they know the value of life. And they admire someone who puts feet to their beliefs, who is authentic, who is real, who is not just spinning things for a political benefit." Palin says she opposes abortion even if the mother is a victim of rape or incest and some analysts say her views hold strong appeal for social conservatives, both men and women who constitute an important base of the Republican Party. But they say many other women will have trouble with her views on social issues once they get to know her better. A analyst Matthew Dowd says when there is a sudden and large shift in polls such as with Palin, it is usually temporary. "Usually when you have swings this large and this quick, they do not stick for a long time. They are quick, because something has changed fundamentally, and then people take a second look at this," he said. There was a similar phenomenon in 1984, when Democratic presidential candidate Walter Mondale nominated Geraldine Ferraro as his vice presidential candidate. She was the first woman to be nominated as vice president on a major U.S. party ticket, Palin is the second. Mondale's pick gave him a sudden 15-point boost in the polls, but within weeks, the numbers returned to where they were before. Mondale ended up losing the election in a landslide to Ronald Reagan. The Palin phenomenon has definitely caught the Obama campaign by surprise. Obama acknowledged that Palin has energized Republicans, but said he could not believe that voters would being swinging back and forth "this wildly." "What we are going to have to do is see how things settle out over the next few weeks, when people start examining who is actually going to deliver on the issues that people care about." With less than eight weeks to go to the November 4 election, women voters may determine whether Governor Sarah Palin is a shooting star or a political force to be reckoned with now and in the future. 200809/48429。
