Swiss national Louis Palmer fulfilled a childhood dream when he set off from his home country on July 3, travelling over desert, city and sea in 17 countries by a “solar taxi” to reach UN Climate Change Conference in Bali, Indonesia."In 1986, I was a 14-year-old boy, I was dreaming that when I will be an adult, I want to drive around the world," he told reporters."Then it came to my mind, how can I travel around the world and enjoy the beauty of this world with a car that is polluting the world? Then I thought the perfect car would be a solar car."His car, which has become a major attraction at the gates of the summit of some 188 nations, was built in three years with scientific help from four universities and 15 Swiss companies. The car pulls a trailer with six squares metres of solar panels which soak up the sun. The electricity is fed into the battery which powers the car, and can run for up to 100 kilometres a day."It's the first time in history that a car is driving around the world without a single drop of petrol," boasted Palmer, a teacher by training. His epic solar journey is not his first adventure -- he traversed Africa on a bicycle and North America in a light aircraft. So far, Palmer has gone by land through Europe and the Middle East, then by sea to India and on to Indonesia. After traversing much of Asia, Australia, North America and Africa, he will return to Switzerland to try and drum up support for the commercial possibilities of solar cars. For the moment, he has his hands full, with more curious customers waiting to take a ride in his unique automobile which, he said, "works like a Swiss clock." /200803/29703。

  • Lovelorn staff at a Japanese marketing company can take paid time off after a bad break-up with a partner, and more "heartache leave" on offer when they get older.Tokyo-based Hime amp; Company, which also gives staff paid time off to hit the shops during sales season, says heartache leave allows staff to cry themselves out and return to work refreshed. "Not everyone needs to take maternity leave but with heartbreak, everyone needs time off, just like when you get sick," CEO Miki Hiradate said.Staff aged 24 years or younger can take one day off per year, while those between 25 and 29 can take two days off and those older can take three days off, the company said."Women in their 20s can find their next love quickly, but it's tougher for women in their 30s, and their break-ups tend to be more serious," Hiradate said.Hime amp; Company staff can also take two mornings off twice a year as "sales shopping leave", so they can race to stores to hunt for bargains."Before, women could take half-days off to go to sales, but you'd have to hide your shopping bags in lockers by the train station," Hiradate said."But with paid leave, we don't have to feel guilty about bringing our shopping bags to work, and we can enjoy the best part about sales shopping -- talking about our purchases afterwards."
Far from being heavy, lumbering and clumsy, pregnant women are often fascinating, beautiful andserene, according to the artistic director of one British ballet company. And to prove it, Balletlorent is recruiting 12 pregnant women to star in a dance production alongside six professional ballet dancers."MaEternal" will be performed in the northern English city of Newcastle in May and is offering the 12 who get through the auditions "a chance to share with an audience the beauty of what it means to carry the life of another within you."Artistic Director Liv Lorent, who, coincidentally, is pregnant herself, says she has always been keen to combine trained dancers with people from all ages and stages in life to make her ballet productions richer."I've done projects in the past where I have invited all sorts of people -- children, old people, builders, footballers, doctors, all sorts -- to take part," she said."This is another development of a long-held wish to mix up the different physical types in my choreography. The shape of people changes the way they move, and I like that very much."She notes the stark contrast between the typically lithe light and muscular physique of a dancer, and the softer, rounder contours of a pregnant woman, and delights in it."You can't get a 25-year-old size 8 ballet dancer type body to move with the weight, the gravitas or the sheer cheerful spirit of a pregnant woman," she said.Lorent promises that no previous dance experience is necessary to audition for a part in MaEternal. The only requirement is that anyone wishing to take part should be up to 32 weeks by the time of the performance on May, 14. Beyond that, she says, the risk is too high of unplanned dramas on stage. As well as recruiting 12 pregnant women, Lorent has also signed up Lynn Campbell, an active birth therapist who runs pregnancy classes in and around Newcastle, to advise on the movements and abilities of expectant mothers."Culturally we don't always have the words to celebrate the beauty of pregnancy, and although people are often fascinated by it, they don't know how to express that, so they say things like 'Aren't you big!'" Campbell said."So this is a real opportunity for pregnant women to be seen in a new way." /200803/31194。
  • Google#39;s DeepMind have revealed a new speech synthesis generator that will be used to help computer voices, like Siri and Cortana, sound more human. Named WaveNet, the model works with raw audio waveforms to make our robotic assistants sound, err, less robotic. WaveNet doesn#39;t control what the computer is saying, instead it uses AI to make it sound more like a person, adding breathing noises, emotion and different emphasis into senteneces. Generating speech with computers is called text-to-speech (TTS) and up until now has worked by piecing together short pre-recorded syllables and sound fragments to form words. As the words are taken from a database of speech fragments, it#39;s very difficult to modify the voice, so adding things like intonation and emphasis is almost impossible. This is why robotic voices often sound monotonous and decidedly different from humans. WaveNet however overcomes this problem, by using its neural network models to build an audio signal from the ground up, one sample at a time. During training the DeepMind team gave WaveNet real waveforms recorded from human speakers to learn from. Using a type of AI called a neural network, the program then learns from these, much in the same way a human brain does. The result was that the WaveNet learned the characteristics of different voices, could make non-speech sounds, such as breathing and mouth movements, and say the same thing in different voices. Despite the exciting advancement, the system still requires a huge amount of processing power, which means it will be a while before the technology appears in the likes of Siri. Google#39;s machine learning unit DeepMind is based in the UK and have previously made headlines when their computer beat the Go World champion earlier this year. /201609/468205。
